Made to order donuts served from a food truck? It is a delicious concept that has Chincoteague locals and island visitors both frequenting over and again.

Malissa Watters, a writer for Delmarva Now, caught up with Brea Reeves owner and operator of Sandy Pony Donuts, who officially opened for business in April 2015. Working out of a food truck parked across the shopping plaza that houses Atlantic Shoals Surf Shop, the shop offers fresh hot donuts in custom flavors.

Brea Reeves created the concept, after realizing this was a virtually untapped market opportunity. Because no other island businesses sell made-to-order donuts, along with the help of her boyfriend, Ben Wang, they formulated the original business plan.

They are proud of the business and the professional family they have created, employing island natives that they have met since living and working on the island. Ben’s commitment is strong as well, as he has also been driving over 3 hours from Dunkirk to help when he can.

The team started out with 16 flavor combinations all to pay special homage to Chincoteague culture, like the “Misty Mint,” a mint glazed doughnut with mini chocolate chips named after the famous Chincoteague pony, Misty.

The food truck also offers sno-cones and funnel cake for other sweet treats. The best part about operating her new food truck business has been the positive feedback from customers.

“I could probably eat a dozen a day,” said Pat Robbins, an island resident. And she is not alone. Since the opening locals and tourists have been flocking to the shop, sometimes multiple times a day to taste the different donut flavors.

She especially enjoys watching people savor her made-to-order doughnuts.
